PROGRAMA GENERAL
4 WEEKS
CLASSES:
BEGINNING SPANISH 101 ESPAÑOL INICIAL
8 credits (semester).  First and second semester of college.  For students with no previous knowledge of Spanish.  They will study the basic structure of Spanish with emphasis in speaking. The daily schedule is divided as follows:  9:00 am Grammar (Theory); 10:00 am Grammar (Practice); 11:00 am Written & Oral Skills; 12:10 pm Conversation; 1:10 pm Lecture on Spanish Culture. 

BEGINNING SPANISH 102 ESPAÑOL ELEMENTAL
8 credits (semester).  Second and third semester of college.  This is a continuation of Spanish 101 witih the same daily schedule. 

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I, II, III  ESPAÑOL INTERMEDIO
8 credits (semester).  Undergraduate.  It has three different intermediate levels; Intermediate III is the highest.  Further development of spoken and written Spanish and introduction to Spanish culture with readings, lectures, and videos on literary and cultural topics.  The daily schedule is divided as follows:  9:00 am Grammar (Theory); 10:00 am Grammar (Practice); 11:00 am Written & Oral Skills; 12:10 pm Conversation Classes or Videos; 1:10 pm Lectures on Spanish Culture: 1:10 pm Those students who wish and are able can attend lectures on literature and culture or Commercial Spanish to earn additional credits upon passing tests:

  • Flamenco: Culture and Music
  • Keys to Spanish Contemporary Culture
  • Spanish 20th Century Drama
  • Sociological Aspects of Present-Day Spain

SPANISH 400 INTRODUCTION TO SPANISH LITERARY GENRE
8 credits (semester).  Undergraduate.  9:00 am – 1:10 pm.

ADVANCED SPANISH 500  ESPAÑOL SUPERIOR
8 credits (semester).  Dual level:  Undergraduate/Graduate.  9:00 am – 1:10 pm.  Intensive practice in advanced Spanish Grammar, drill in syntax, idiomatic constructions to develop greater fluency and improvement in oral comprehension, conversation skills, and composition.  As part of the course, an overview of the culture and civilization of Spain, through a series of lectures on the historical, philosophical, political, literary, and artistic development of Spain will take place. 

Additional Credits in Culture and Civilization or Commercial Spanish:  Students can earn more credits from 1:10 pm – 2:00 pm.  Students may attend the optional lectures on Culture and Civilization, or Commercial Spanish instead, to earn additional credits upon passing tests. 

Lectures on Culture and Civilization
At 1:10 pm several lectures will be given (optional attendance).  These lectures are intended to provide students with knowledge of the outstanding aspects in Spanish culture:

  • From Franquismo to Democracy
  • Spanish Poets After the Civil War (1936-1939)
  • Flamenco: Culture and Music
  • Keys to Spanish Contemporary Culture
  • Spanish 20th Century Drama
  • Sociological Aspects of Present-day Spain

PROGRAMA SUPERIOR  501, 502
4-week program divided in blocks of two weeks:  Four topics are studied the first two weeks and four topics the last two weeks. 

CURSOS MONOGRÁFICOS DE LITERATURA  501
8 credits (semester).  Dual level:  Undergraduate/Graduate.  9:00 am – 1:10 pm.  This course concentrates on literature. Major works of classical and contemporary Spanish authors are studied:

  •  Literatura del Siglo de Oro: Cervantes
  •  Literatura española y cine
  •  Evolución histórica del español
  •  Narradoras españolas contemporáneas
  •  Novela y Postmodernidad
  •  García Lorca y su tiempo
  •  La muerte en la Edad Media:  Artes Plásticas, Literatura y 
       Pensamiento
  • Realismo en el teatro hispanoamericano contemporáneo 

CURSOS MONOGRÁFICOS DE LENGUA, GRAMÁTICA, LINGÜÍSTICA Y METODOLOGÍA  502
8 credits (semester).  Dual level:  Undergraduate/Graduate.  9:00 am – 1:10 pm. This program concentrates on the study of very advanced grammar, syntax,  semantics, linguistics, methodology and the Spanish language in its colloquial form.

  •  La enseñanza del español: La Morfología
  •  Variedades lingüísticas: La lengua española en América
  •  La palabra en el contexto
  •  Metodología de la enseñanza del español como lengua
  •    extranjera
  •  Español coloquial
  •  La enseñanza del español: La Sintaxis

Additional credits in Culture and Civilization  Or Commercial Spanish
Students can earn up to 8 CREDITS from 501 and 502 by choosing eight topics in any combination.  1 additional credit can be earned by attending lectures on literature, culture and civilization; OR 2 additional credits can be earned by attending Commercial Spanish (see description next page.) 

Lectures on Culture and Civilization 1 extra credit
Several lectures will be given (optional attendance).  These lectures are intended to provide students with knowledge of the outstanding aspects in Spanish culture:

COMMERCIAL SPANISH 2 extra credits
At 1:10 p.m. an optional course on the Language of Commercial Spanish will be offered.  The course is designed to study Spanish business and commercial terminology.  Students will be able to study Spanish vocabulary and business practices in Spain. 
 
ACADEMICS—COURSES—CREDITS
The summer program is divided into four different sections/groups:
General, Superior, Intensivo I, Intensivo II. 

GENERALFour weeks, 8-9 credits
This program is an undergraduate program, except for the  most advanced course that is dual level:  graduate/undergraduate. 

SUPERIORGraduate program, Four weeks, 8-9 credits
It is divided into two-week sessions (4 topics studied first two weeks, and 4 topics studied last two weeks).  Each topic is worth 1 credit.  It is a 4-week program but students are allowed to attend, with special permission, the first two or the last 2 weeks, if they cannot participate during the 4 weeks.  Students can choose from the topics in language/ linguistics/methodology (502) or topics in literature (501); students can combine the topics in literature with the topics in language/linguistics/ methodology in any combination.  Students will study 4 topics the first two weeks and 4 topics the last two weeks.  Please note that the Programa General is not interchangeable with Superior 501 or 502; 501 (literatura) and 502 (lengua, lingüística y metodologia) are interchangeable. 

INTENSIVO IFirst two weeks, 3-4 credits
Undergraduate program, except for the most advanced course that is dual level:  graduate/undergraduate. 

INTENSIVO IILast three weeks, 5-6 credits
Undergraduate program, except for the most advanced course that is dual level:  graduate/undergraduate. 

GRADUATE – UNDERGRADUATE CREDITS
Students can receive 8 graduate or undergraduate credits during the summer program.  Students can take courses for credit or non-credit.  The fee will be the same.  The number of credits will depend on the  length of the program you select and the number of hours you will be in class.  MLSA will help you with the selection of courses, transfer of credits, transcripts, and all academic aspects of the program. 

TEXTBOOKS
Students will purchase all textbooks the first day of class in the University.  You can plan to spend approximately $25-30.

SPANISH COMPOSITION I – COMPOSICIÓN I
Undergraduate, 3 semester hours of credit: 45 classroom contact hours. Prerequisite: Spanish 204.
Students should have a good knowledge of Spanish grammar. The essentials of Spanish grammar as applied in composition are studied. The course concentrates on writing through writing experiences and practical application and criticism. 8:30 am to 10:30 am or 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

SPANISH 320, SPANISH CONVERSATION I – CONVERSACIÓN I
Undergraduate, 3 semester hours of credit: 45 classroom contact hours. Prerequisite: Spanish 204, fourth semester of college/ equivalent, or instructor approval.
Intensive practice in conversation. Pattern practice, preparation, and delivery of dialogues and topical talks. Basic phonetics and practice in pronunciation. 8:30 am to 10:30 am or 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

SPANISH 430, CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION OF SPAIN
Undergraduate, 3 semester hours of credit: 45 classroom contact hours. Prerequisite: Conversation and Composition or equivalent.
This is an introductory course to study the culture of Spain from the early ages to the 21st Century. This course will study geography, history, and politics, and it will include social and cultural manifestations such as literature, art, architecture, music and dance of different ethnic groups and regions to be able to understand the diversity and complexity of Spain. 8:30 am to 10:30 am or 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
